15. Jesus's Commandments

Jesus had two commandments about the commandments: Don't think that he came to destroy the old ones and obey all of his new ones. He also said that all of the old commandments can be summarized in just two: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. So I guess all you need to worry about are these two, plus Jesus's commandments, which are listed below.

I found 143 commandments that are attributed to Jesus in the gospels. Of these 14 seem good (to me, anyway). They are listed separately after the others.

Don't think Jesus came to destroy the commandments in the Hebrew scriptures.

Follow Jesus.

Believe in Jesus.

He that believeth not shall be damned. Mark 16:16

He that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3:36

Hear Jesus's word and believe on the one who sent him.

He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. John 5:24

Testify that Jesus is ordained to judge the quick and the dead.

And he [Jesus] commanded us ... to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. Acts 10:42

Jesus's body and blood

Eat Jesus's flesh and drink his blood.

Jesus ... said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup ... and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood. Matthew 26:26-28

Jesus ... said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and ... gave it to them: and they all drank of it. Mark 14:22-24

Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. John 6:53-54

Jesus's Disciples

Give a cup of cold water to a a little one in the name of a disciple.

Whosoever shall give to drink unto one of these little ones a cup of cold water only in the name of a disciple, verily I say unto you, he shall in no wise lose his reward. Matthew 10:42

Listen to Jesus's disciples.

He that heareth you heareth me. Luke 10:16a

Don't despise Jesus's disciples.

He that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. Luke 10:16b

Scribes and Pharisees

Do whatever the scribes and Pharisees tell you to do.

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying ... All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do. Matthew 23:1-3

Don't do what the scribes and Pharisees do.

Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, Saying The scribes and the Pharisees ... do not ye after their works. Matthew 23:2-3

Beware of the scribes.

Beware of the scribes ... these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:38-40

Beware of the scribes ... the same shall receive greater damnation. Luke 20:46-47

Blasphemy and Holy Things

Don't give holy things to dogs.

Give not that which is holy unto the dogs. Matthew 7:6a

Don't cast your pearls before swine.

Neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Matthew 7:6b

Don't blaspheme against the Holy Ghost.

Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. ... Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Matthew 12:31-32

He that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Mark 3:29

But unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. Luke 12:10

Prayer and Fasting

Pray for those who persecute you.

Pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. Matthew 5:44

Pray for them which despitefully use you. Luke 6:28

Don't pray in public.

When thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. Matthew 6:5

Pray alone and in secret.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:6

Don't repeat prayers.

When ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. Matthew 6:7-8

Pray like this:

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. Matthew 6:9-13

When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Luke 11:2-4

But don't repeat it.

Don't look sad and disfigure your face while fasting.

When ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. Matthew 6:16

When you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face.

When thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face. Matthew 6:17

Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send laborers into his harvest.

Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. Matthew 9:38

Don't say long prayers (just to show off).

Beware of the scribes ... Which ... for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:38-40

Beware of the scribes ... Which ... for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation. Luke 20:46-47

Pray.

Pray: for ye know not when the time is. Mark 13:33

Pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man. Luke 24:36

Continuing instant in prayer. Romans 12:12

Continue in prayer ... in the same with thanksgiving. Colossians 4:2

The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 1 Peter 4:7

Preaching

Preach the gospel to every creature.

Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. Mark 16:14

Preach the kingdom of God.

Go thou and preach the kingdom of God. Luke 9:60

Preach to the people.

He [Jesus] commanded us to preach unto the people. Acts 10:42

Sex

Don't look at a woman with lust.

Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28

If your right eye offends you, pluck it out.

If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:29

If your right hand offends you, cut it off.

If thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. Matthew 5:30

Marriage and Divorce

Don't divorce your wife (unless she has fornicated).

Whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery. Matthew 5:32a

Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery. Matthew 19:9

Don't divorce your wife (even if she has fornicated).

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. Matthew 19:6

What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. ... And he saith unto them, Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery against her. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery. Mark 10:9-12

For the LORD, the God of Israel, saith that he hateth putting away: for one covereth violence with his garment, saith the LORD of hosts: therefore take heed to your spirit, that ye deal not treacherously. Malachi 2:16

Don't marry a divorced woman.

Whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Matthew 5:32b

Whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery. Matthew 19:9

Family Values

Let the dead bury the dead.

Another of his disciples said unto him, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead. Matthew 8:22

And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead. Luke 9:59-60

Don't love your family more than Jesus.

He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Matthew 10:37

Hate your family and yourself.

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. Luke 14:26

Children

Be converted like a little child.

Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3

Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. Mark 10:15

Let little children come to Jesus.

Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me. Matthew 19:14

Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Mark 10:14

Receive a child in Jesus's name.

Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me. Mark 9:37

Food and Clothing

Pay no attention to what you eat or drink.

Take no thought for ... what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink. Matthew 6:25b, Luke 12:22b

Take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? Matthew 6:31

Seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink. Luke 12:29

Let no man therefore judge you in meat or drink. Colossians 2:16

Give no thought to what clothes you wear.

Take no thought for ... what ye shall put on. Matthew 6:25c, Luke 12:22c

Wear a wedding garment.

Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness, there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 22:12-13

Don't wear long robes with enlarged borders.

The scribes and the Pharisees ... do not ye after their works ... they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments. Matthew 23:2-5

Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing ... these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:38-40

Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes ... the same shall receive greater damnation. Luke 20:46

If you have a purse or a scrip (traveling bag), take it.

He that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip. Luke 22:36a

Swords

Don't take the sword.

Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword. Matthew 26:52

If you don't have a sword, sell your garment and buy one.

He that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one. Luke 22:36

Good Works

Let everyone see your good works.

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works. Matthew 5:16

But all their works they do for to be seen of men. Matthew 23:5

Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation. 1 Peter 2:12

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works. Titus 2:7

Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:3-4

Legal Matters

Agree with your adversary quickly, before you are thrown into prison.

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Matthew 5:25-26

When thou goest with thine adversary to the magistrate, as thou art in the way, give diligence that thou mayest be delivered from him; lest he hale thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and the officer cast thee into prison. I tell thee, thou shalt not depart thence, till thou hast paid the very last mite. Luke 12:58-59

Don't swear.

Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne: Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. Matthew 5:34-36

But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation. James 5:12

If you are sued, give more than you are required to give.

If any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. Matthew 5:40

Him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also. Luke 6:29

If someone forces you to do something, do twice as much as you were forced to do.

Whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Matthew 5:41

If your brother trespasses against you, go and tell him to his face.

If thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. Matthew 18:15

If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him. Luke 17:3

If he won't listen to you, take one or two others with you.

If he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. Matthew 18:16

If he won't listen to the two (or three) of you, tell the church.

And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church. Matthew 18:17a

If he won't listen to the church, treat him as a heathen and a publican.

If he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican. Matthew 18:17b

If someone takes away your property, don't ask for it back.

Of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. Luke 6:30

Economics

Lend to anyone who asks to borrow from you.

From him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. Matthew 5:42

Give to anyone who asks you for anything.

Give to him that asketh thee. Matthew 5:42

Give to every man that asketh of thee. Luke 6:30

Store your treasures in heaven, not on earth.

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth ... But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven. Matthew 6:19-20

Don't be rich.

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Matthew 19:23-24

And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! ... It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. Mark 10:23-25

Woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Luke 6:24

Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. Luke 16:24-25

Your Life

Don't think about your own life.

Take no thought for your life. Matthew 6:25a, Luke 12:22a

Don't find your life.

He that findeth his life shall lose it. Matthew 10:39a

Lose your life.

He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it. Matthew 10:39b

Whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. Matthew 16:25

Whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. Mark 8:35

Whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it. Luke 17:33

Don't try to save your life.

And if you lose it, you'll find it.

Whosoever will save his life shall lose it. Matthew 16:25

For whosoever will save his life shall lose it. Mark 8:35

Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it. Luke 17:33

Names and Name-calling

Don't call your brother "Raca".

Whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council. Matthew 5:22a

Don't call anyone a fool.

Whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Matthew 5:22b

Don't let anyone call you "Rabbi."

The scribes and the Pharisees ... do not ye after their works ... they ... love ... to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. Matthew 23:2-7

Be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. Matthew 23:8

Don't call anyone "Father."

Call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Matthew 23:9

Don't let anyone call you "Master."

Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. Matthew 23:19

The End of the World

When the end of the world comes, don't offend the son of man's angels.

So shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend ... And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Matthew 13:40-42

Don't be deceived by false Christs.

Take heed that no man deceive you. For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Matthew 24:4-5

Take heed lest any man deceive you: For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. Mark 13:5-6

Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. Luke 21:8

Don't worry about wars and rumors of wars.

Ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. Matthew 24:6

When ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet. Mark 13:7

Ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Luke 21:9

If anyone says to you, "Lo, here is Christ" or "Lo, there he is", don't believe it.

If any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24:23-24

If any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not. Mark 13:21

Learn a fig tree parable.

Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Matthew 24:32-33

Watch.

Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. Matthew 24:42

Watch ... for ye know not when the time is ... Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning: Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch. Mark 13:33-37

Be ready for the coming of the Son of man.

Be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh. Matthew 24:44

When the end of the world is about to happen and you have to testify, don't worry about what to say.

When they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. Mark 13:11

And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Luke 21:13-15

Christian Living

Be meek.

Blessed are the meek. Matthew 5:5

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved ... meekness. Colossians 3:12

Follow after ... meekness. 1 Timothy 6:11

Shewing all meekness unto all men. Titus 3:2

Make up with your brother before leaving a gift at the altar.

Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Matthew 5:23-24

Say only "Yes" or "No."

Let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil. Matthew 5:37

Don't resist evil.

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil. Matthew 5:39a

Turn the other cheek.

Whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. Matthew 5:39

Unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other. Luke 6:29

Love your enemies.

Except for those who hate the Lord.

Bless those who curse you.

Bless them which persecute you. Romans 12:14

Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing. 1 Peter 3:9

Seek first the kingdom of God.

Don't think about tomorrow.

Ask.

Ask, and it shall be given you. Matthew 7:7a

Knock.

Enter through the narrow gate.

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Matthew 7:13-14

Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. Luke 13:24

Beware of false prophets.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Matthew 7:15

Be as wise as a serpent.

Be ye therefore wise as serpents. Matthew 10:16a

Be as harmless as a dove.

Be .... harmless as doves. Matthew 10:16b

Don't be afraid of people who can kill you.

Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul. Matthew 10:28a

Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. Luke 12:4

Fear the one who can send you to hell after he kills you.

Don't love being greeted in the marketplace.

Take in strangers.

Give a cup of water in Jesus's name to a Christian.

Whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. Mark 9:41

Don't devour widows' houses.

Beware of the scribes ... Which devour widows' houses ... these shall receive greater damnation. Mark 12:38-40, Luke 20:46-47

Don't laugh.

Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Luke 6:25

Don't let anyone say nice things about you.

Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. Luke 6:26

Hear the word of God and do it.

My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. Luke 8:21

Be born again.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. John 3:3

Don't be angry with your brother without cause.

Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. Matthew 5:22

Forgive others.

If ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Matthew 6:14-15

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses. Matthew 18:34-35

Forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses. Mark 11:25-26

Pay your taxes.

They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. Matthew 22:17-21

If a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, and ... hath covered the naked with a garment. Ezekiel 18:5-7c

Visit the sick.

Go and do likewise. (Follow the example the Good Samaritan.)

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. Luke 10:30-37
