Episode 261: The end of Luke

Luke 19-24

Zacchaeus and the sycamore tree

19 1-2 When Jesus was in Jericho, a rich publican named Zacchaeus wanted to see him.

3-4 Since he was a short man, he climbed a sycamore tree to see Jesus above the crowd.

5 As Jesus passed by the sycamore tree, he said to Zacchaeus, “Come down from the tree, because I need to stay at your house.”

6 So Zacchaeus came down and went with Jesus to his house.

7 Some who saw it, said, “Jesus is going to stay at a sinner's house.”

8 But Zacchaeus said to Jesus, “I give half my possessions to the poor, and if I take anything unfairly from someone, I give four times as much back.”

9-10 Jesus said to him, “Well, today you and your family have been saved, because you are a son of Abraham, and the Son of man came to find lost people.”

Sell your clothes to buy a sword

22 Jesus said to the apostles, “When I sent you out without a purse, bag, or sandals, did you need anything?”

And they said, "Nothing."

35 Jesus said,

Well now, take a purse and bag. And if you don't have a sword, sell your clothes to buy one.

36 They said, "We have two swords."

Jesus said, "That is enough."

Jesus is taken to Herod

23 6-7 When Pilate heard that Jesus was a Galilean, he sent him to Herod, who was in Jerusalem at the time.

8 Herod was glad to see Jesus since he'd heard so much about him.

9 He asked him many things, but Jesus didn't answer.

11 After Herod's soldiers mocked him, put a gorgeous robe on him, he sent him back to Pilate.

Jesus is crucified

26-27 As they led Jesus away to be crucified, there were many people who followed Jesus, including women who wept for him.

Jesus turned and said to them and said,

Don't weep for me. Weep for yourselves and your children.

29 Someday people will say, “Blessed are women who can't have children. And breasts that aren't sucked."

30 They'll say to the mountains, "Fall on us." And to the hills, "Cover us."

32 Jesus was crucified at a place called Calvary between two criminals.

34 Jesus said, “Father forgive them, for they don't know what they're doing.”

39 One of the criminals that was crucified with Jesus, said to him, “If you're Christ, save yourself and us.”

40 But the other criminal rebuked and said, "We're getting what we deserve. But this man did nothing wrong.”

41 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43 Jesus said to him, “Today, you'll be with me in paradise.”

Jesus rises from the dead

24 1 On the first day of the week, early in the morning, some women came to the sepulcher with spices.

2-3 When they arrived, they found the stone rolled away, and Jesus's body was missing.

4 They saw two men standing by them in shining garments.

5 The women bowed their faces to the ground, and the two men said to them,

6 “He's not here, but is risen.”

9 Then they left the sepulcher, and told the eleven, and all the rest.

10 Among the women who went to the tomb were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James.

11 But those who they told didn't believed them.

12 Then Peter ran to the sepulcher, saw the linen clothes, and departed, not knowing what to think.

The road to Emmaus

13 That same day, two others went to a village named Emmaus, which was about sixty furlongs from Jerusalem.

15-16 While they were walking, Jesus joined them, but they didn't recognize him.

17 Jesus said to them, “Why are you so sad?”

18 One of them, whose name was Cleopas, said,

Are you a stranger around here?

Haven't you heard what's happened recently?

19-20 Jesus said, "What things?"

They said,

The prophet Jesus of Nazareth was crucified a few days ago.

22 Some women in in our group went to the sepulcher and found that his body was missing. They also saw some angels who said he was alive.

24 Some others went to the sepulcher and didn't see the body either.

25 Jesus said,

You fools! Don't you believe the prophets?

26 Don't you know Christ must have suffered these things to enter his glory?

27 And he explained everything in the scriptures that concerned himself.

28 As they neared the village, he prepared to leave them.

29 But they talked him out of it, saying, “It's getting late. Stay with us.” So he did.

30 As they were eating dinner, he took the bread, blessed it and gave it to them.

31 Then, they recognized him. And he vanished out of their sight.

32 They said to each other, “Didn't our hearts burn within us when he talked to us about the scriptures?”

Jesus appears (and eats fish and honey)

33 Then they returned to Jerusalem and found the eleven who were gathered together

34 They said, "The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon."

35 And the others told them how they recognized Jesus in the breaking of the bread.

36 Then, while they were speaking, Jesus came and stood in the middle of them, and said, "Peace be with you."

37 And they were all afraid, thinking they'd seen a ghost.

38 Jesus said,

Why are you afraid?

39 Look at my hands and feet. Touch me and see. A spirit doesn't have flesh and bones like I do.

40 Then he showed them his hands and feet

41 As they were still wondering and were too happy to believe, he said, “Do you have something to eat?”

42 They fed him a piece of boiled fish and a honeycomb.

43 And he ate it in front of them.

Jesus goes to heaven

50-51 Jesus went with them as far as Bethany. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed them and was carried up into heaven.

A few more words about this episode

When Jesus was in Jericho (19:1)
Jesus and his disciples passed though Jericho on their way to Jerusalem. Jericho is on the west bank of the Jordan river, about 40 kilometers east of Jerusalem.
Pilate sent Jesus to Herod (23:6)
This refers to Herod Antipas, who had John the Baptist beheaded, not to his father, Herod the Great, who killed the male infants in Bethlehem after Jesus was born.
The road to Emmaus (24:13-32)
A similar, but much shorter story is told in Mark 16:12-13.
About sixty furlongs from Jerusalem (24:13)
Since a furlong is one-eighth of a mile, this would be about 75 miles (12 kilometers).
Jesus went with them as far as Bethany. (24:40)
Bethany is a town about three kilometers east of Jerusalem.
