Episode 33: With modest gaze and lovely eyes

Surah 37: Those who set the ranks (As-Saffat)

The Highest Chiefs and plastic clay

5-7 The Lord of the rising sun has adorned the lowest heaven with ornaments (the planets) that are safe from every devil. 8-10 The devils can't listen to the Highest Chiefs because they are pelted on every side, and are outcasts, in perpetual torment - except for a few who get to hear a bit now and then, when they're not burning in the flame. 11 We created them from plastic clay.

This is mere magic

12-16 Don't be surprised when they mock a portent by saying, “This is mere magic. When we are dead and nothing but dust and bones, will we be made alive again?”

19-20 There will be a single shout, and they'll say: “Woe for us! This is the day of judgment.”

Together with their wives

22-23 Those that did wrong will go to hell along with their wives. 31-32 Then they'll say to each other, We are about to taste the doom

A mad poet

35-36 When they heard it said, "There is no god but Allah," they were scornful, and said, Should we reject our gods for a mad poet? 38 Now taste the painful doom.

With modest gaze and lovely eyes

40-43 But the single-minded slaved of Allah will be honored in the gardens of delight. 44-47 On couches facing one another, where they'll be brought a cup of white, delicious liquid that won't give them headaches or make them mad. 48-49 And with them are maidens with modest gaze and lovely eyes, pure as the hidden eggs of an ostrich.

The tree of Zaqqum

50-53 But some will say, “When we are dead and have become just dust and bones - can we be brought back to life?” 55 Then he looks and sees the depth of hell.

62-63 This is the Tree of Zaqqum. We [Allah] use it to torment wrong doers. 64 It grows in the heart of hell. 65 Its fruits are like the heads of devils. 66-67 The inhabitants of hell are forced to eat its fruit and drink boiling water. 68 Then they return to hell.

71 Most of the men of old went astray. 75 Except for the single-minded slaves of Allah.

Noah was one of our believing slaves

75-76 Noah prayed to us, and we saved him and his family. 81-82 He was one of our believing slaves. We drowned everyone else.

Abraham: I dreamed that I must sacrifice you

83-87 Abraham said to his father and his folk, “What are you worshiping? What's your opinion of the Lord of the Worlds?”

88-89 Abraham glanced at the stars and said, “Lo! I feel sick!”

90-92 Abraham turned to their gods and said, “Aren't you going to eat? What's wrong with you? Why aren't you speaking?”

93 Then Abraham attacked the gods, striking them with his right hand.

97 Abraham's father's people said, “Let's build a fire and burn Abraham on it.”

98 And they designed a snare for him, but We made them the undermost.

99 Abraham said, “I'm going to my Lord who will guide me.”

101 So we gave him a gentle son.

102 When his (unnamed) son was old enough to walk, Abraham said, “I had a dream that I must sacrifice you. What do you think about that?”

Abraham's son said, “Do what you are commanded. I won't even flinch.”

103-6 So Abraham flung his son down on his face, and we called to him, saying, “Abraham! You passed the test.”

109-111 Peace be to Abraham! That's how we reward the good. He is one of our believing slaves. 112 And we gave him tidings of the birth of Isaac.

Moses, Aaron, and Elias were our believing slaves

114-22Moses and Aaron were two of our believing slaves.

123 Elias was sent to warn people. 127-8127-8 But they denied him, so they'll be sent forth to the doom - except for the single-minded slaves of Allah. 130-2130-2 Elias is one of our believing slaves.

Lot and an old woman who stayed behind

133 Lot was sent to warn. 134-5 We saved him and his family, except for an old woman who stayed behind. 136 We killed everyone else.

Jonah would have tarried in its belly

139Jonah was swallowed by a fish. 143-4 If he didn't glorify Allah, he'd still be in the fishes belly.

Allah didn't create any female angels

150 Did we create any female angels? a href="/quran/37.html#151">151 No, we didn't.

a href="/quran/37.html#152">152 Does Allah have any children? a href="/quran/37.html#153">153 No, he has no children. And he doesn't prefer daughters to sons. a href="/quran/37.html#154">154 What the heck is wrong with you, anyway?

The single-minded slaves of Allah

158 They say Allah is related to the jinn.

162-3 You can't excite anyone against him, except for those who will burn in hell.

168-9 If we were just reminded by the men of old, we'd be the single-minded slaves of Allah.

176-9 The doom is coming soon enough. It'll be a sad day for those who have been warned. Just watch and see.

182 Praise Allah, the lord of the worlds.

A few more words about this episode

The Highest Chiefs (37:8)
No one knows who the highest chiefs are, but whoever they are, the the devils can't listen to them (because they are pelted on every side).
We created them from plastic clay. (37:11)
What were humans created from?
Those that did wrong will go to hell along with their wives. (37:22)
If a man goes to hell, his wives go with him.
Should we reject our gods for a mad poet? (37:36)
The mad poet here is Muhammad (PB&J be upon him)
The tree of Zaqqum (37:62)
This is a tree that grows in the bottom of hell. Its fruits are shaped like the heads of devils. The inhabitants of hell are forced to eat its fruits and then drink boiling water.
Here's a picture of it.
Noah prayed to us, and we saved him and his family. (37:76)
Did one of Noah's sons die in the flood?
So we gave him a gentle son. (37:101)
In the biblical story, Ishmael is born first, then Isaac.
Although the Quran is unclear about this, it seems to reverse the order. (See verse 112, where Isaac is born after Abraham nearly sacrifices his son.)
We saved Lot and his family, except for an old woman who stayed behind. (37:135)
The old woman who stayed behind is, presumably, Lot's wife. (Although she didn't stay behind in the Bible. She was turned into a pillar of salt for looking back after leaving Sodom. See Drunk With Blood: Remember Lot's wife)
