0 Don't be friends with disbelievers (Surah 3)

Episode 5: Don't be friends with disbelievers

Surah 3: The family of 'Imran

3 Allah revealed the Quran to you (Muhammad), which confirms what he previously revealed in the Torah and the Gospel.

4 Those who disbelieve in Allah's revelations will face a heavy doom.

7 Some scriptures are allegorical and some are not. No one understands the allegorical stuff except for Allah.

10 Those who disbelieve will be fuel for Allah's fire.

11 When Pharaoh's folk who disbelieved, Allah punished them with a severe punishment.

12 Disbelievers are going to hell.

13 There was a battle between Muslims and disbelievers. One side saw that the other side had twice as many soldiers. There's a lesson here for those who have eyes.

15 Those who avoid evil in this life will live in an underground garden with flowing rivers, with their Lord and pure companions.

16 Those who believe say, "Guard us from the punishment of fire."

19 Non-Muslims will be swiftly punished by Allah for their nonbelief.

21 Disbelievers will have a painful doom.

24 Disbelievers say, “The fire will only burn us for a certain number of days.” (But they are wrong about that. They will burn forever.)

27 You (Allah) make dead people live and live people dead.

28 Don't let believers be friends with disbelievers.

31-32 Say this, Muhammad, to all mankind: “If you love Allah, follow me. If you do that, Allah will love and forgive you. Obey Allah and the messenger (Muhammad). Allah doesn't love the disbelievers.”

The birth of Mary, the mother of Jesus

33 Allah liked Adam, Noah, Abrahams' family, and the family of 'Imran more than everyone else.

35 Remember when 'Imran's wife said, “My Lord, I've vowed to give you what's in my belly.” 36 And when she gave birth, she said, “It's a girl! I'll name her Mary. Protect her and her children from Satan.”

The birth of John the Baptist

37 Allah made Zachariah Mary's guardian. 38-39 One day, when Zachariah was praying, his Lord said to him, “You're going to have a son named John.” 40 Zachariah said, “I'm too old to have a son and my wife is barren.” But the angel said, “It'll happen. Allah does whatever he wants.” 41 Zachariah said, “Give me a sign so I'll know this will happen.” So the angel made it so Zachariah couldn't speak for three days.

Allah's favorite woman (Mary)

42 The angels said to Mary, “You are Allah's favorite woman.” 47 Mary said, “How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?” The angel said, “Allah can do whatever he wants.”

The talking baby Jesus

46 The baby Jesus will speak to everyone from his cradle.

47 Mary said,

How can I have a child when no man has ever touched me?

But OK. Allah can do whatever he wants.

Jesus makes clay birds fly

49-51 Jesus will say this to the people of Israel: “I'll make a clay bird, breathe on it, and it'll become a real bird. I'll heal people and raise the dead. I'll tell you what to eat. I'll confirm the Torah and make some things legal that were forbidden. So be faithful to Allah by following me. Allah is my Lord and your Lord. Worship him.”

Jesus makes a clay bird fly away

52 But when Jesus saw their disbelief, he cried, “Who will help me in the cause of Allah?” The disciples said, “We will. We believe in Allah.”

Allah is the best of schemers

54 As the disbelievers schemed, Allah schemed. Allah is the best schemer.

55-56 Remember when Allah said to Jesus, “I'm cleansing you of disbelievers and setting your followers above disbelievers. As for disbelievers, I'll chastise them with a heavy chastisement in this world and the next. No one will help them.”

66 Don't argue about things that you know nothing about. Allah knows. You don't.

67 Abraham was neither a Jew nor a Christian. He was a Muslim.

68 The true followers of Abraham are followers of Muhammad.

Don't believe what non-Muslims say

73 Don't believe anyone who isn't a Muslim.

77 Allah won't speak to those who ignore him. Theirs will be a painful doom.

85 All non-Muslims will be rejected by Allah after they die. They will be losers in the hereafter.

86-87 Those who disbelieved after believing will suffer the curse of Allah, the angels, and men combined. 88 They are doomed, and no one will help them.

91 Those who die in disbelief will suffer a painful doom and will have no helpers.

103 Remember that you were on the brink of the fire when Allah saved you from it.

105 Those who argue and dispute after receiving the clear proofs will suffer an awful doom.

106 On the day when some faces will be whitened and some blackened, those with the whitened faces will say to those with the blackened faces, So you disbelieved after you believed. Taste the punishment for your disbelief.

110 Muslims are the best people on earth. They behave themselves, forbid indecency, and believe in Allah. Allah loves people who believe in him. (Most non-Muslims are "evil-livers.")

116 Those who disbelieve will burn in the Fire.

118 Don't be friends with non-Muslims. They all hate you and want to ruin you.

Disbelievers will have an awful, painful, shameful doom

124 Wasn't it enough for you when your Lord sent 3000 angels to help you? 125 If you're really good, Allah will send 5000 angels next time.

127 Disbelievers are evil doers.

129 Allah forgives or punishes people however he wants.

130 Do not be guilty of usury, doubling and quadrupling the sum lent.

131 Don't burn in the fire Allah has prepared for disbelievers.

132 Obey Allah and the messenger (Muhammad).

139 Believers always defeat unbelievers. 147 Help us defeat the disbelievers.

149 Believers will be losers if they obey disbelievers.

151 We will terrorize the disbelievers. They will live in the Fire.

155 Those who retreat while fighting in a holy war are inspired by Satan. 157 If you die fighting for Allah, you'll be rewarded in heaven.

162 Unbelievers will burn forever in the Fire.

169 Those who die fighting for Allah aren't dead. They're alive.

176-8 Disbelievers will have an awful, painful, shameful doom.

181 Taste the punishment of burning!

185 You are triumphant if you are removed from the fire and placed in paradise.

188 Those who brag about doing good will have a painful doom.

192 Those who the Lord casts into the fire will have no helpers.

195 Those who were killed in battle while fighting for me will be forgiven for all of their sins. I will bring them to the underground gardens where rivers flow. 196-7 But those who disbelieve will go to hell.

A few more words about this episode

Allah revealed the Quran to you (Muhammad), which confirms what he previously revealed in the Torah and the Gospel. (3:3)
If Allah revealed the Quran, Torah, and Gospel, then why does the Quran so often contradict the other two?
When Pharaoh's folk who disbelieved, Allah punished them with a severe punishment. (3:11)
It's hard to know what Allah is talking about here. But maybe he's referring to the ten plagues of Egypt.
There's a lesson here for those who have eyes. (3:13)
If you don't get the lesson here, that's because you don't have eyes and this story is allegorical. (Only Allah understands it. See v.7.)
Pure companions (3:15)
Other translations say "spouses made pure" for "pure companions." But I think you get the idea.
The family of 'Imran (3:33)
'Imran is, according the Quran, Jesus's maternal grandfather (Mary's father). The name isn't mentioned in the Bible, but that doesn't stop Catholics from giving him a name. They called him Joachim.
The Quran calls Mary's father, 'Imran, with is also the name it gives to Moses's father -- whose biblical name was Amran.
But whoever 'Imran is this verse is, Allah loves him more everyone else.
Allah made Zachariah Mary's guardian. (3:37)
This story in verses 37-41 is taken from Luke 1. It agrees fairly well with it, except for the part about Zachariah being Mary's guardian.
I'll make a clay bird, breathe on it, and it'll become a real bird. (3:49)
The story about Jesus fashioning birds out of clay and then making them fly away is not found in the New Testament. The author [Allah, Muhammad?] apparently got it from the Infancy Gospel of Thomas.
Your Lord sent 3000 angels to help you. (3:124)
The angels supposedly came to fight for Muhammad in the Battle of Batr.
