Episode 38: Would you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother? (Surahs 47-49)

Surah 47: Muhammad

Smite the necks of disbelievers

^1-3 Allah makes the works of disbelievers vain, because disbelievers follow falsehood.

⁴ Smite the necks of the disbelievers. After defeating them in battle, enslave them. If Allah wanted, he could punish them without you, but he chooses to use you for that. Those who die fighting for Allah will be rewarded.

⁷ If you help Allah, he'll help you.

^8-9 Allah will destroy the disbelievers, and make all their actions fruitless, because they reject what Allah has revealed.

Allah wiped them out

¹⁰ Haven't they seen what he did to the people before them? Allah wiped them out. He'll do the same to the disbelievers. ¹¹ That's because Allah is the patron of believers. And disbelievers have no patron.

¹² Disbelievers may eat and be happy now, but the Fire will be their final home.

¹³ How many towns have we destroyed? They had no helper.

Boiling water to tear their bowels

¹⁵ Those who obey Allah will live in a garden with flowing milk that doesn't change its flavor, and with rivers of delicious wine. While those in the fire will drink boiling water that tears their bowels.

²⁰ Some believers say, “If only a surah were revealed!” Their hearts are diseased. Woe to them.

Allah cursed them, making them deaf and blind

²³ Allah has cursed them and made them deaf and blind.

²⁴ Won't they meditate on the Quran, or are there locks on their hearts?

^25-26 Those who turn away from Islam and obey those who hate what Allah has revealed have been seduced by Satan. ²⁷ How will they like it when the angels gather them, smiting their faces and backs? That will happen because they angered Allah and hated what pleases him.

³² Allah will make the actions of those who disbelieve fruitless.

³³ Obey Allah and the messenger [Muhammad].

³⁴ Those who die as disbelievers will never be pardoned by Allah.

³⁵ Don't seek peace while you are winning the war. Allah is with you. He won't deprive you of your rewards.

³⁶ Some are called to give money for Allah's causes. But there are some who hoard.

Surah 48: Victory (Al-Fath)

An evil thought concerning Allah

⁶ Those who think an evil thought concerning Allah will be cursed and sent to hell - a hapless journey's end.

¹⁰ Those who swear allegiance to you (Muhammad) swear allegiance only to Allah.

We have prepared a flame for disbelievers

¹³ We [Allah] have prepared a flame for those who disbelieve in Allah and his messenger [Muhammad].

¹⁴ Allah forgives whoever he wants and punishes whoever he wants.

¹⁶ Say to the wandering Arabs who were left behind, if you run away (like you did before), he [Allah] will punish you with a painful doom. ¹⁷ Allah will punish whoever turns back with a painful doom.

Muhammad is Allah's messenger

¹⁸ Allah was well pleased when the believers swore allegiance to thee [Muhammad] beneath the tree. ¹⁹ They'll get lots of booty.

²⁵ We punished the disbelievers with a painful punishment.

²⁸ Allah will cause Islam to prevail over all other religions.

²⁹ Muhammad is Allah's messenger. Those with Muhammad are ruthless toward disbelievers and merciful toward themselves.

Surah 49: The Private Apartments (Al-Hujurat)

Shhh! Muhammad might be around here

¹ Believers must not be forward in the presence of Allah and his messenger [Muhammad]. ² Don't speak above the voice of the Prophet [Muhammad], nor shout when speaking to him as you shout to one another. ³ Those who subdue their voices in the presence of Allah's messenger [Muhammad] are righteous and will receive an immense reward. ⁴ Those who call you [Muhammad] when you're in your private apartments have no sense. ⁵ They must be patient until you come to them.

Would you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother?

⁶ If an evil-liver gives you some news, verify it before smiting people in ignorance, and later feel guilty about it.

⁷ The messenger of Allah is with you. Allah made the faith appealing to you, and made disbelief, lewdness, and rebellion hateful to you.

¹¹ Don't defame or insult one another with nicknames. ¹² And don't spy on and gossip with one another. Would you like to eat the flesh of your dead brother?

Would you teach Allah your religion?

¹⁴ Don't say, "We believe," but rather say, "We submit." ¹⁵ True believers are those who believe in Allah and his messenger [Muhammad] and never doubt afterward but give their money and their lives for the cause of Allah.

¹⁶ Say to them, Muhammad: “Would you teach Allah your religion?” ¹⁸ Allah sees what you do.
