Episode 39: This is a strange thing (Surahs 50-51)

Surah 50: Qaf

This is a strange thing

1 Qaf. 2 The disbelievers say, “This is a strange thing.”

3 When we're dead and have become dust, can we be brought back to life again? That's a bit of a stretch.

7 We [Allah] spread the earth out. 8 That's a reminder for every penitent slave.

We're closer to him than his jugular vein

12-14 Noah's people, the dwellers at Ar-Rass, the tribe of Thamud, the tribe of A'ad, the Pharaoh, Lot's brothers, the dwellers in the wood, and the folk of Tubb'a - they all denied their messengers. So I [Allah] killed them.

15 Were we worn out by the first creation? Then why would we be worn out by the second? We're closer to humans than their jugular veins.

We will say to hell, "Are you filled up yet?

20 On the threatened day, the trumpet is blown. 21 And everyone will come, along with a driver and a witness.

24-26 Someone will say to them, “Both of you rebel ingrate doubters will be cast into hell. Because you set up another god besides Allah.”

27 His comrade will say, “I didn't cause him to rebel. It was all his fault.”

28-29 He [Allah] will say, “Don't argue about it in my presence. Your sentence can't be changed. I'm not a tyrant to my obedient slaves.”

30 On that day, we'll say to hell, "Are you filled?" Hell will answer, "is there more to come?”

The earth will split (that will be easy for us to do)

36 How many generations have we destroyed?

38 We created the heavens and earth in six days.

42 On that day they'll hear the awful cry of truth, when dead people rise from their graves. 44 The earth will split. That'll be easy for us to do.

45 Warn people who fear my threat with the Quran.

Surah 51: The Winnowing Winds (Adh-Dhariyat)

When is the Day of Judgment?

1 By those who winnow with a winnowing….

10 Accursed be the conjecturers. 12 They ask, "When is judgment day?" 13 It is the day when they will be tormented in the fire.

14 Someone will say to them, “Taste your torment. This is what you sought to hasten.”

Share your wealth with the poor and outcast

15-19 Those who avoid evil share their wealth with the poor and outcast.

Allah sent us to throw clay stones on guilty people

24 Have you heard the story about Abraham, Muhammad? 26 He brought a fatted calf to feed his guests.

28 They told him he'd have a wise son. 29 Then his wife moaned, smote her face, and cried out: “I'm a barren old woman!”

31 Abraham said, "What is your errand from Allah?"

32-33 They said,

We're sent to throw clay stones on guilty people. 35-36 We looked for believers, but we couldn't find any that had surrendered. 37 So we killed them all to warn others of a painful doom.

Moses: A wizard or a madman

38 We [Allah] sent Moses to the Pharaoh, with a clear warrant. 39 But the Pharaoh said, "Moses is a wizard or a madman." 40 So we drowned him and his people in the sea.

The tribes of A'ad and Thamud

41 We sent a fatal wind against the tribe of A'ad. 43-44 And a thunderbolt killed the tribe of Thamud.

They say I'm a wizard or a madman

46 The folk of Noah were a licentious folk.

48 We laid out the earth. How gracious is the spreader. 49 We created everything in pairs.

50 Run to Allah. I am a plain warner to you from him.

52 They say to me, "You are a wizard of a madman," as they did to all the previous messengers.

I created the jinn (so they'd worship me)

56 I created the jinn and humans so they would worship me. 57 I don't ask them to feed me or give me money.

60 Who to those who disbelieve.

A few more words about this episode

We spread the earth out. (50:7)
Did he (or they) spread the earth out flat like a pancake?
The dwellers at Ar-Rass (50:12)
We've heard about some of these people who were on Allah's hit list, but no one knows who "the dwellers at Ar-Rass, the dwellers of the wood," or "the folk of Tubb'a" were. But whoever they were, Allah killed them.
We created the heavens and earth in six days. (50:38)
How long did it take Allah to create heaven and earth?
Have you heard the story about Abraham, Muhammad? (51:24)
He should have heard the story before, since it's repeated often enough. (See especially 11:69-83.)
For the Bible's story about Sodom and Gomorrah, see Drunk With Blood: Sodom and Gomorrah
We laid out the earth. How gracious is the spreader. (51:48)
Allah laid out the earth by spreading it. Like frosting on a flat cake.
We created everything in pairs. (51:49)
This is not true. Many bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and even some animals reproduce asexually.
Run to Allah. I am a plain warner to you from him. (51:50)
hese words could not have been spoken by Allah. So how is Allah the author of the Quran?
