0 Have you heard the story about Moses? (Surah 20)

Episode 21: Have you heard the story about Moses?

Surah 20: Ta Ha

Allah has the most beautiful names.

1 Ta. Ha. 8 Allah has the most beautiful names.

Have you heard the story about Moses?

9 Have you heard the story about Moses?

10 He saw a fire and said, “I see a fire. Maybe it can tell us what to do.”

11 When he reached the fire, Allah said,

12 Take of your shoes, Moses, because you're in the holy valley of Tuwa.

14 I'm God. My name is Allah.

15 I'm not saying when, but the hour is coming.

17 What's that in your right hand?

18 Moses said, “Oh, this is my staff.”

19 Allah said, “Throw it down.”

20 So Moses threw it down and it became a serpent.

21-24 Allah said,

Pick it up and it'll become a staff again.

Put your hand in your armpit, and it'll become white. Don't worry. It won't hurt. (It'll be another token.) Now go to the Pharaoh. He's been bad.

25-29 Moses said, "Untie the knot in my tongue, so people can understand me."

36 Allah said, "Okay."

More Moses stories

37-38 Allah said to Moses,

Another time we were inspired by your mother, who was also inspired."

39 She said, “Put him in an ark, and throw it into the river, so that my enemy and his enemy will take him.”

40 Your sister said, “Should I show you who will nurse him?”

And we returned you to your mother. Then you killed a man and lived for years in Midian. Now you've come here, and I've attached myself to you.

42-43 Go now with your brother to visit Pharaoh.

44 Speak a gentle word to him, so that maybe he'll obey or fear.

47-48 Say this to him, “We are messengers from your Lord. Let the children of Israel go.

We bring a token from your Lord. You are doomed if you deny and turn away."

56 We showed him all our tokens, but he denied them and refused to believe.

57 He said, “Are you trying to drive us away from our land with magic?”

58 Moses said, “Let's have a magic contest.”

66-67 The Pharaoh's wizards threw down their staves, and the staves appeared to run. Moses was afraid.

68-69 We said, “Don't be afraid. Throw yours down and it will eat theirs.”

70 Then the wizards fell down, crying: “We believe in the Lord of Aaron and Moses.”

71 The Pharaoh said to them, “I'll cut off your hands and feet on alternate sides and then crucify you on the trunks of palm trees.”

72 The wizards said, “Go ahead and do that. Allah's magic is better.”

74 Those who are guilty will go to hell, where they neither die nor live.

77 We inspired Moses, saying, “Leave with your slaves at night through a dry patch in the sea.” 78 The Pharaoh and his army followed and were drowned.

80 Then We sent manna and quails.

As-Samiri's saffron calf

85 As-Samiri (Samaritan) mislead your people. 87-88 He made a saffron-colored calf, which made a lowing sound. 94 When Moses returned from the mountain, Aaron said to him, “Don't grab my beard or head.”

White eyed with terror

102 When the trumpet is blown, we [Allah] will assemble the guilty, who will be white eyed with terror. 103 They will murmur among themselves, saying, “It's only been ten days.” 104 Others will say, "It's only been one day." 105 When they ask you about the mountains, say, “The Lord will break them into dust.”

A lecture in Arabic

113 We've revealed the Quran in Arabic.

Allah and Iblis

115 We said to the angels, “Fall prostrate before Adam.” 117 And they all did, except Iblis.

The tree of immortality and power

120 The devil whispered to Adam, saying, “Shall I show you the tree of immortality and power?” 121 And they ate from the tree, became ashamed, and hid behind leaves in the garden.

127 We reward those who don't believe our revelations with a stern and lasting doom.

How many generations have we destroyed?

128 How many generations have we destroyed?

A few more words about this episode

I'll crucify you (20:71)
Crucifixion was a Roman form of punishment that was unknown at the time.
As-Samiri mislead your people. (20:85)
But in the Quran's version of the story, a Samaritan (Al-Samiri) is blamed for the calf instead of Aaron.
But Samaritans didn't exist until the Assyrian conquest of Israel in 721 BCE, about 700 years after the time that Moses (if there was a Moses) lived.
We've revealed the Quran in Arabic. (20:113)
Then why are there so many non-Arabic words and sources for it?
And why would God prefer one language over another? Is he the tribal god of the Arabs?
The tree of immortality and power (20:120)
In Genesis (3:22-24), Adam and Eve are driven out of the Garden of Eden before eating from the "Tree of Life" and thereby becoming immortal. But here they eat from "the tree of immortality and power" -- yet they don't become immortal or powerful, they become ashamed of their nakedness. Why?
