Episode 12: Fight until all religion is for Allah

Surah 8: Spoils of War (Al-Anfal)

The spoils of war belong to Allah and Muhammad

1 The spoils of war belong to Allah and his messenger (Muhammad). Obey Allah and his messenger (if you are true believers). 2 True believers are filled with fear whenever Allah's name is mentioned.

7 Allah destroyed the unbelievers.

9 When you asked Allah for help, he sent 1000 angels.

12 Your Lord (Allah) inspired the angels to say, “I will strike fear into the hearts of the disbelievers. Then smite their necks and each of their fingers.” 13 That is because they opposed Allah and his messenger (Muhammad). Whoever does that will be severely punished.

14 Disbelievers will be tormented in the fire.

15 When believers fight with disbelievers, they must not retreat. 16 Those who do will go to hell.

17 You Muslims didn't kill them. Allah did. And Muhammad didn't throw things. Allah did.

18 Allah weakens the plans of disbelievers.

20 Obey Allah and his messenger (Muhammad) and listen to him when he speaks.

22 The worst beasts in Allah's sight are those who are the deaf, dumb, and senseless.

24 Obey Allah and his messenger (Muhammad).

Allah is the best plotter

28 Your children and possessions are a test.

30 When disbelievers plot against you (Muhammad), Allah will plot against them. Allah is the best plotter.

Taste the doom because you disbelieved

31 People will revile our revelations, saying, “The Quran is nothing but the fables of long ago.” 32 They'll say, “Hey Allah, if the Quran is true, rain down some stones on us and bring on a painful doom.”

35 Allah will say to them, “Taste the doom because you disbelieved.” 36 The disbelievers will be gathered into hell. 37 Allah will heap the wicked, piece by piece, into a pile in hell.

Fight until all religion is for Allah

39 Fight until all religion is for Allah.

41 One fifth of the spoils of war is for Allah and the messenger (Muhammad).

46 Obey Allah and the messenger.

Disbelievers are the worst beasts in Allah's sight

50 The angels smite the face and backs of disbelievers, saying, “Taste the punishment of burning!”

51 Allah isn't a tyrant to his slaves.

54 We drowned Pharaoh's people.

55 Disbelievers are the worst beasts in Allah's sight.

58 If you fear treachery from anyone, then you should break any treaty you have with them.

Take no prisoners (until you've made a slaughter)

61 Accept peace, if it is offered to you.

65 Tell the believers to fight. Believers can defeat disbelievers even when they are outnumbered ten to one. Because disbelievers are without intelligence.

67 A prophet may not take captives until he has made a slaughter in the land.

69-70 It is lawful for you to enjoy what you have won in war -- Including slaves. 71 Allah gave you power over them.

A few more words about this episode

When you asked Allah for help, he sent 1000 angels. (8:9)
This refers to the Battle of Badr. But elsewhere (Quran 3:124) Allah said he sent 3000 angels to help Muhammad at that battle.
Muhammad didn't throw things. Allah did. (8:17)
If you don't understand what this verse is talking about, don't worry. It's all explained in the Hadith. One day when the Muslims were fighting non-Muslims, Muhammad picked up some dust and threw it at the non-Muslims while yelling, "You're ugly." And then God killed the non-Muslims that were hit by the dust. Or something like that. (See here for the details.)
Your children are a test. (8:28)
Allah is testing you with your children to see if you spend too much tine on them.
Don't let them get in the way of more important things -- like jihad
