Episode 36: Believe in whatever scripture Allah sends down (Surahs 42-43)

Surah 42: Counsel (Ash-Shura)

He could have made them one

1 Ha. Mim. A'in. Sin. Qaf.

7 We [Allah] have inspired in you [Muhammad] a lecture in Arabic to warn of a day when people will be divided into two groups: some will lounge in the garden, others will roast in the Flame. 8 If Allah wanted, he could have made them one community, but he decided to be merciful to some, leaving the wrong doers with no friend nor helper. Or have they chosen protecting friends besides him? 10 If there are differences among you, the verdict lies with Allah.

Nothing looks like Allah

11 Nothing looks like Allah.

Believe in whatever scripture Allah sends down

15 Say: I believe in whatever scripture Allah sends down.

16 Those who argue about Allah will have his wrath upon them. Theirs will be an awful doom.

19 Allah is gracious to his slaves.

21 Do they have partners for Allah? Wrong doers will have a painful doom.

23 Do good works. Be loving and kind to your relatives.

I [Muhammad] ask for no fee.

26 Allah accepts those who do good works, but disbelievers will have an awful doom.

If bad things happen to you, it's your own fault

30 If misfortune strikes you, it's your own fault. 31 You can't escape. 34 Sometimes he [Allah] kills people for things that they did.

42 Those who oppress people or wrongfully rebel will have a painful doom.

The eternal losers

44 Those whom Allah has led astray will have no protecting friends. When they see the doom they'll ask, “Is there are way out?”

45 The believers will say, “They are the eternal losers.”

46 For those whom Allah has led astray there is no road.

50 He [Allah] makes barren whoever he wants.

Surah 43: Ornaments of Gold (Az-Zukhruf)

Scripture made plain - so you can understand it

1 Ha. Mim. 2 This is scripture made plain. 3 A lecture in Arabic so you can understand it.

How many prophets have we sent?

6 How many prophets have we sent? 7 Whenever we sent prophets, the people mocked them. 8 So we had to kill them.

They're just guessing

19 They claim that Allah made female angel slaves. 20 But they're just guessing.

That's what happens to rejecters!

21-22Whenever we send a warner, the people say, “We believe in the faith of our fathers. We're following in their footsteps.”

23 The warner says, “My religion is better than your fathers' religion.”

And the people say, “We don't believe you.”

25 So we killed them. That's what happens to rejecters!

This is mere magic

26 When Abraham said to his father and his folk, “I don't like your religion.”

30 They said, “Your religion is mere magic. We don't believe in it.”

33-35 We [Allah] would have made silver roofs, stairs, doors, and couches, and ornaments of gold for disbelievers. but then mankind would have been one.

We assign a devil for a comrade

36-37 We assign a friendly devil to those who forget about us that turns them away from Allah. 38 Until one day he comes to us and says, “I'd like to get far away from my evil comrade!” 39 Because you did wrong, you'll share in the doom.

Behold, they laughed at our tokens!

46-47 When we [Allah] sent Moses with our revelations and tokens to the Pharaoh, they laughed at them. 48 So we grasped them with a torment.

49 They said, “Oh wizard! Ask your Lord to stop tormenting us.”

50 So we eased their torment, but they broke their word.

51-52 Pharaoh made a proclamation, saying, “I'm better than this guy, who is despicable and can hardly speak. 53 He doesn't have armlets of gold, and no angels were sent with him.” 55 So we drowned every last one of them.

They laughed at the son of Mary, too

57-58 People laughed at the son of Mary, saying, “Is he better than our gods?”

63 Jesus came with clear proofs.

65 But the people divided into factions. Woe to them from the doom of a painful day.

66 It will come upon them suddenly, when they least expect it. 67 Friends will be foes to one another on that day.

Hell's torment

68-70 But my [Allah's] slaves will enter the garden with their wives. 71 They'll be served with gold trays and goblets.

74 But the guilty will be immortal, suffering hell's torment forever. 75 It won't be lightened for them, and they will despair. 76 But we didn't wrong them; they wronged themselves. 77 They'll cry out, saying, "Please, stop torturing us." But he'll say: "No, you have to stay here."

81 Say (Muhammad): If the beneficent one has a son, I'll be the first to worship him. (But he doesn't have a son.)

88 He [Muhammad] said, "These people aren't believers."

89 Then bear with them and say, "Peace." They'll find out later.

A few more words about this episode

Ha. Mim. A'in. Sin. Qaf. (42:7)
This is the third of seven surahs that begin with the Arabic letters Ha and Mim. These surahs are known collectively as the Hawamim. This is the only surah that wastes two verses on these arbitrary letters. Not even Allah knows why they're there
If there are differences among you, the verdict lies with Allah. (42:10)
Disputes, whether religious or political, must be decided by Allah. Democracy is not an option.
Nothing looks like Allah. (42:11)
This verse is sometimes interpreted to mean that images of Allah, Muhammad, and the other prophets are forbidden.
But still, it's probably true. Nothing looks like nothing.
They claim that Allah made female angel slaves. (43:19)
No one knows who Allah is talking about here. But, whoever it was, they claimed that Allah made female angels - which he vehemently denies. All of Allah's angels are males.
So we drowned every last one of them. (43:55)
Was Pharaoh drowned or saved?
But my [Allah's] slaves will enter the garden with their wives. (43:68-70)
Allah's slaves will have wives in paradise. Will this be the wives that they had in this life, or will Allah provide new ones?
Then bear with them and say, "Peace." They'll find out later. (43:89)
Allah encourages Muhammad to be tolerant toward nonbelievers. But then he ruins it by throwing in a veiled threat.
