1 Peter 1-5

Greetings and Salutations!

1 ^1-2 From the apostle Peter to the strangers scattered among the elect chosen with foreknowledge by God through the sprinkling of Jesus's blood.

Jesus is coming soon (so gird up the loins of your mind)

^5-7 God will keep you in the faith until the last day, when Jesus will appear.

¹³ So gird up the loins of your mind.

¹⁷ God doesn't respect anyone, but judges everyone by their works.

God planned to kill Jesus from the very beginning

^19-20 The precious blood of Jesus was ordained before the creation of the world but revealed in these last times.

Love each other (and enjoy life while you can)

²² Love each other.

²⁴ All flesh is as grass, which is here today and gone tomorrow.

Living stones

2 ¹ Avoid evil, malice, hypocrisy, and envy. Don't speak badly about others.

^3-4 The Lord is a living stone.

⁵ And so are you.

¹¹ As strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts.

Obey all human laws and authorities (including the king)

¹³ Obey the king, and all human laws and authorities.

¹⁴ They exist to encourage good behavior and punish evildoers.

¹⁷ Fear God. Honor the king.

Slaves, obey your masters (even the evil ones)

¹⁸ Slaves, obey your masters, not only the ones who are good and gentile, but the evil ones as well.

Wives, obey your husbands

3 ¹ Wives, obey your husbands.

³ Don't braid your hair, wear gold jewelry, or fancy clothes.

⁵ That's how holy women did it in the good old days.

They trusted in God and obeyed their husbands.

⁶ Sarah obeyed Abraham and called him lord.

⁷ Husbands, honor your wife, as the weaker vessel.

Do good, avoid evil

Be ready to defend your beliefs (like Jesus did to the spirits in prison)

¹⁵ Be ready to explain and defend your beliefs to those who ask about them.

¹⁸ Christ suffered for the just and the unjust.

¹⁹ He preached to the spirits in prison.

²⁰ Among whom were the people who were drowned in the flood, from which only eight people survived.

The gospel was preached to dead people (and the end is coming soon)

4 ⁶ The gospel was preached to dead people.

⁷ The end of the world is coming soon.

Love covers a multitude of sins

⁸ Above all things, love one another. Because love covers a multitude of sins.

⁹ Be hospitable, without complaining.

¹⁵ Don't murder, steal, be a busybody, or do any other kind of evil to each other.

It'll be hell for nonbelievers

¹⁷ If we misbehave, we'll be punished. But it'll be much worse for nonbelievers!

¹⁸ If righteous people are just barely saved, what will happen to the ungodly?

The devil wants to eat you

5 ⁸ Watch out, because the devil is like a roaring lion, walking around, looking for people to eat.
