0 The wives of Noah and Lot burned in the fire (Surahs 66-69)

Episode 44: The wives of Noah and Lot burned in the fire (Surahs 66-69)

Surah 66: Banning (At-Tahrim)

Banning the ban

1 Oh prophet [Muhammad]! Why do you ban that which Allah has made lawful for you - seeking to please your wives? 2 Allah has made it lawful for you (Muslims) to break your oaths.

3 When the prophet told something to one of his wives, she told someone else. Allah told him what she did. When the prophet confronted her, she said, "Who told you?" The prophet said, "The knower, the aware [Allah] told me."

4 You [Muhammad's wives] should repent, because you wanted Muhammad to be banned from what Allah made lawful for him.

5 If Muhammad divorces you, his Lord will give him more wives that are better than you.

It's your own fault

6 Believers should avoid the fire, whose fuel is men and stones, and which is tended by strong, severe angels who obey Allah's commands.

7 Someone will say to the disbelievers, "It's your own fault. You're being paid for what you did."

9 Fight against the disbelievers and hypocrites and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journey's end.

The wives of Noah and Lot burned in the fire

10 Allah has an example for you. The wives of Noah and Lot, two of our righteous slaves, betrayed them. So Allah said to them, "Enter the fire." 12 And Mary, 'Imran's daughter, was chaste, so we breathed some of our spirit into her.

Surah 67: The Sovereignty (Al-Mulk)

Missiles for the devils

2-3 He created seven heavens. Can you see any cracks in them?

5 We [Allah] made the stars for missiles to throw at devils, for which we have prepared a doom of flame.

Far removed from mercy are the dwellers of the flames

6 Disbelievers are doomed to hell, a hapless journey's end. 7 When they are flung into it, they'll hear its roaring as it boils up. 8 Whenever a fresh body is flung in, the wardens say, “Didn't someone warn you about this?”

9-10 They'll say, “Yes someone warned us, but we didn't listen. If we had listened, we wouldn't be here.” 11 So they acknowledge their sins, but they are shown no mercy as they dwell in the flames.

Will he cause the earth to swallow you?

16 Do you think you are safe from him, so he won't cause the earth to swallow you? 17 Or let loose on you a hurricane? 18 You saw what happened to those who denied.

27 When you see the pain-filled faces of the disbelievers, someone will say to them, "This is what you asked for." Who will protect them from the painful doom? 30 Say: If all the water disappears on earth, who will bring your water?

Surah 68: The Pen (Al-Qalam)

You're not a madman, Muhammad

2 You [Muhammad] are not a madman. 4-6 You have a tremendous nature. You'll see and they'll see just who is demented.

We shall brand him on the nose

8-9 Don't obey the rejecters who want you to compromise.

15-16 When our [Allah's] revelations are recited to him, he says “They are merely old fables. We will brand him on the nose.”

35-36 Should we treat those who have surrendered like we treat the guilty?

Lo! He is indeed mad

45 My [Allah's] scheme is firm.

46 Or do you [Muhammad] ask for a fee?

51 Those who disbelieve would like to smite you [Muhammad] with their eyes. They say, "He [Muhammad] is indeed mad."

Surah 69: The Reality (Al-Haqqah)

What is reality?

1 The reality! What is reality?

The tribes of Thamud and A'ad - Can you see any remnant of them?

4 The tribes of Thamud and A'ad disbelieved in the coming judgment.

5 Thamud was destroyed by lightning.

6 A'ad was destroyed by a fierce roaring wind.

7 He [Allah] sent the wind for eight days and seven nights, until they were all dead like hollow trunks of palm trees.

8 Can you see any remnant of them?

We carried you upon the ship

9-10 Pharaoh and the communities that were destroyed disobeyed the messenger, so he [Allah] gripped them with a tightening grip.

11 When the waters rose, we carried you on a ship, to make a memorial to you, so people would remember.

A seventy-cubit chain

13-14 When the trumpet blasts, the earth and mountains will be crushed with one crash. 15-16 On that day the event will happen, and heaven will split in two. 17 Eight angels will hold up the throne of your Lord. 18 Everyone's secrets will be exposed.

19-21 Those whose book is in his right hand will go to a garden with lots of grapes.

25 Those whose book is in his left hand, will say, “Oh, I wish I hadn't been given my book.”

30-36 Then someone will say to them:

Take him and fetter him. Expose him to hell fire. And attach him to a 70-cubit long chain. Because he didn't believe in Allah (the Tremendous). So no one will love him, and his only food will be filth.

We then severed his life artery

43 This is a revelation from the Lord of the Worlds.

44-46 As for those who have invented false sayings about us, we will take them by the hand and sever his life artery. 47 And no one can keep us off of him.

50 Lo! This is anguish for disbelievers. 54 But it is absolute truth from your Tremendous Lord.

A few more words about this episode

Mary, 'Imran's daughter (65:1)
Once again (See 19:28) Mary is said to be the daughter of 'Imran - the father of Moses. A historical error of about 1400 years.
When the prophet told something to one of his wives (66:3)
Here's the backstory on this.
Muhammad promised his wife Hafsah that he would no longer have sex with his slave girl, Mariyah. But he broke his promise by having sex with Mariyah on Hafsah's day. (Muhammad's wives had rotating days in which they took turns having sex with him.) When Hafsah complained, he asked her not tell anyone. But Hafsah told Aisha, another wife of Muhammad, about his sexual affair with Mariyah. When Muhammad asked her about it, she denied telling anyone.
He created seven heavens. (67:2-3)
No one knows what the Quran is talking about here. See Wikipedia: Seven Heavens - Islam
When the waters rose, we carried you on a ship (69:1)
The "you" here is Muhammad, I guess. Somehow Allah carried Muhammad on Noah's ark 3000 years or so before Muhammad was supposedly born.
