0 How to remarry a wife whom you previously divorced (Surahs 58-60)

Episode 42: How to remarry a wife whom you previously divorced (Surah 58-60)

Surah 58: She Who Disputeth (Al-Mujadilah)

How to remarry a wife whom you previously divorced

1 Allah has heard the words of the woman who argued with you (Muhammad) about her husband. She has complained to Allah, and Allah heard your conversation. Allah hears things. 2 Those of you who divorce your wives by saying they are like their mothers are wrong. They aren't like your mothers. 3 A man who remarries a wife (whom he previously divorced by saying she was like his mother) must free a slave before he touches her again. Allah knows what you're doing. 4 A man who doesn't have the wherewithal to own a slave must fast for two months before touching his former wife. If he can't do the fast, he must feed sixty poor people. (Oh and by the way - disbelievers will have a painful doom.)

Allah will remember what you did (even after you've forgotten)

5 Those who oppose Allah and his messenger [Muhammad] will be abased. And disbelievers will have a painful doom. 6 Someday Allah will raise the dead and tell them what they did. Allah keeps an account and remembers (even after everyone else has forgotten). 7 Allah attends every meeting.

Conspiracies are from the devil

8 Those who conspire against or disobey the messenger [Muhammad] will feel the heat of hell - a hapless journey's end. 10 Conspiracies are inspired by the devil to vex believers.

12 Give alms to the poor. 13 Pay the poor due.

The devil's party

14 Don't be friends with people who make Allah angry. 15 Allah has prepared a painful doom for them. 16 They turn people away from Allah, so they'll have a shameful doom. 17 Their wealth and children won't be of any help. They'll own and live in the fire. 19 They are the devil's party. Won't the devil's party be losers?

20 Those who oppose Allah and his messenger [Muhammad] will be among the lowest.

21 Allah has decreed: "I and my messengers will conquer."

22 On the last day you won't find believers loving those who oppose Allah and his messenger [Muhammad] - not even their fathers, sons, or brothers. Isn't is Allah's party who is successful?

Surah 59: Exile (Al-Hashr)

Allah casts terror into the hearts of disbelievers

1-2 Allah cast terror into the hearts of the People of the Scripture who disbelieved, so that they ruined their own houses, with a little help from believers. 3-4 They'll be burned in the fire in the hereafter, because they opposed Allah and his messenger [Muhammad].

Allah has given the spoils to his messenger [Muhammad]

6 Allah has given the spoils to his messenger. He has made him lord over whoever he wants. 7 Whatever spoils Allah gives to his messenger is for his messenger and his family, along with orphans and the needy. Take whatever the messenger gives you, but don't take anything he forbids you from taking.

The hypocrites are like the devil

11 Tell the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture that they are liars. 13 They are more afraid of you than of Allah. 16 The hypocrites are like the devil when he tells people to disbelieve. 17 They'll both be in the fire. 20 Things will not be the same for the owners of the fire and the owners of the garden.

Allah has the most beautiful names

21 If we [Allah] had caused the Quran to descend on a mountain, you [Muhammad] would have seen it torn apart by the fear of Allah. We make these parables so people can reflect.

24 Allah has the most beautiful names.

Surah 60: She That Is To Be Examined (Al-Mumtahanah)

My enemy and your enemy

1 Believers: Don't be friends with my enemy and your enemy. Don't be friends with disbelievers and have no secret friends among them. 2 If they have authority over you, they will be your enemies and do evil to you and will entice you to disbelieve. Have no secret friends among them. 3 Your family and children won't help you on the day of resurrection. Allah sees what you're doing.

Be like Abraham: Hate your family if they don't believe in Allah

4 Abraham set a good example for you when he said to his family, “We reject everything you worship besides Allah, and we reject you. We will hate you forever until you believe only in Allah.”

9 Allah forbids you to be friends with those who fought against you because of your religion.

A lie devised between their hands and feet

10 When believing women come to you as fugitives, examine them. If they are believers, don't send them back to the disbelievers. You may marry them after you have paid dues for them. Return the disbelieving women back to the disbelievers (after they pay you for them).

11 If any of your wives have gone to the disbelievers, and their wives have gone to you, then just make sure that all of the wives are properly paid for.

12 Oh Prophet [Muhammad], if any believing women come to you, promise to obey you, don't say Allah has any partners, don't steal, commit adultery, or kill their children, or lie about things they've devised between their hands and feet, then go ahead and accept them.

13 Believers: Don't be friendly with those who Allah is angry with -- people who disbelieve in the hereafter.

A few more words about this episode

Lie about things they've devised between their hands and feet (60:12)
Some Muslim commentators say this refers to a child conceived in adultery whom the woman claims was her husband's child.
