0 Allah and Iblis (Surahs 13-15)

Episode 17: Allah and Iblis (Surahs 13-15)

Surah 13: The Thunder (Al-Ra'd)

Allah spread out the earth

1 These verses are true, but most people don't believe it.

2 Allah raised up the heavens without visible support. And put the sun on its daily path across the sky. 3 And he spread out the earth.

Everyone and they shadow bows to Allah twice a day

5 Disbelievers will have shackles on their necks and live in the fire forever. 14 The prayers of disbelievers are never answered.

15 Everyone and everything (and their shadow) bows to Allah twice a day (whether they want to or not).

18 Those who do not answer Allah's call will go to hell. 27 Allah sends astray whomever he wants.

31 If it were possible for a surah to move mountains, create earthquakes, or raise the dead, this surah would have done so.

Allah could have guided everyone (but he chose not to). Disasters happen to disbelievers because of what they do. 33 Allah leads disbelievers astray and torments them in this life. 34 Then after they die, he makes them suffer even more pain in the doom of the Hereafter.

35 Those who obey Allah will be rewarded with a shady garden where rivers flow. The reward for disbelief is the fire. 41 When Allah dooms, no one can postpone it.

Surah 14: Abraham (Ibrahim)

Made to drink a festering water

2 Woe to disbelievers. They will have an awful doom. 4 Allah sends people astray whenever he wants.

7 Allah said to Moses, “If you thank me, I'll give you more. But if you don't, your punishment will be dire.”

9 Messengers came to the people of Noah, A'ad, and Thamud, but they shoved their hands in their mouths and said, “We disbelieve.”

13 Then Allah said, “We will destroy them.”

16 They will be forced to drink festering water which they can hardly swallow. 17 They'll feel like they're dying, but they will not be able to. Theirs is a harsh doom.

19 Allah can replace you with a new creation. 20 It's easy for Allah to do.

Garments of pitch, with fire covering their faces

21 There's no escape from Allah's doom.

22 Satan said, “Allah promised you the truth. I promised you and then failed you. I had no power over you, and yet you obeyed me. So it's your own damned fault. I can't help you, and you can't help me. For disbelievers there is a painful doom.”

27-29 Allah sends wrong-doers astray. (Even to hell, a hapless journey's end.) He does whatever he wants.

30 They set up rivals to Allah who mislead people to hell. Say: Enjoy life now, because your journey will end in the fire.

44 Warn people about the day when doom will come upon them.

49 Those in hell will be chained together. 50 Their clothing will be made of pitch, and fire will cover their faces.

Surah 15: Al-Hijr

Lo! You are a madman!

2 Let the disbelievers enjoy their lives now. 3 Let them be fooled by their false hopes. They'll soon find out what will happen to them.

6 They say about the one to whom the Quran was revealed, “Lo! You are a madman!”

8 We [Allah] don't send down angels, but if we did, they'd destroy the disbelievers. 19 We spread out the earth.

9 We [Allah] have revealed the reminder and we are its guardian.

Allah and Iblis

26 We created man from potter's clay and black mud. 27 And we created the jinn from fire.

28 Remember when your Lord said to the angels, “Lo! I'm creating a mortal out of potter's clay and black mud. 29 When I've made him and breathed my spirit into him, fall down and prostrate yourselves to him.”

30 So the angels did that. 31 Except for Iblis.

32 He [Allah] said, “Oh Iblis, why didn't you prostrate yourself?”

33 Iblis said, “I'm not going to prostrate myself to a mortal that you made out of potters clay and black mud!”

34-35 Allah: “You're an outcast then, with a curse until judgment day.”

36 Iblis: “Don't curse me until the humans are resurrected.”

37 Allah: “Okay, I'll wait until then.”

39-40 Iblis: “Because you have sent me astray, I’ll mislead all the humans, except for the ones that are your devoted slaves.”

41-43 Allah: “That's the right thing for me to do. You have no power over my slaves, except for those who follow you. And they are all going to hell.”

Lot: Here are my daughters

49 Allah said to Muhammad,

Tell my slaves that I am forgiving and merciful. 50 And that my doom is a dolorous doom. 51 Tell them about Abraham's guests, 58-59 who said, “We've been sent to a guilty folk, except for Lot's family, who we'll save. 60 Except his wife, of whom We had decreed that she should be of those who stay behind.”

65 They said to Lot's family, “Don't look back.”

67 The city folk were excited to see the new arrivals.

68 Lot said, “These are my guests. 71 But here are my daughters, if you must do that.”

74 And we rained upon them stones of heated clay.

The wood dwellers and Al-Hijr

78-79 The wood dwellers were evil doers, so we took vengeance on them.

80 The people in Al-Hijr denied our messengers and rejected our revelations. 83 So one night we killed them all.

A few more words about this episode

We [Allah] have revealed the reminder and we are its guardian. (15:9)
Allah revealed the "Reminder," which is the Quran. And Allah protects it from all change or corruption. It is the perfect word of God.
But see How the Quran has changed.
Except his wife, of whom We had decreed that she should be of those who stay behind. (15:60)
In the Genesis story, Lot's wife is turned to stone when she looks back at Sodom while it was being destroyed.
In the Quran, Allah decrees that she is to remain in Sodom and be slaughtered with the Sodomites.
The wood dwellers were evil doers, so we took vengeance on them. (15:78-79)
No one knows who the evil wood dwellers were. But God took vengeance on them.
The people in Al-Hijr (15:80)
Although the title of this surah is taken from this verse, no one but Allah knows where it is. He claims that he killed everyone there for disrespecting him or something.
