Episode 268: The trial and death of Jesus

John 17-19

Jesus prays (for glory)

17 ¹ After Jesus finished speaking, he looked up and said,

² You've given the Son power over every living thing, so he can make everyone you've given him live forever.

³ Living forever is to know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.

⁴ I glorified you on earth, and I've finished the work you told me to do.

⁵ So now, Father, glorify me with the glory that I had before the world was created.

⁶ I've made your name known to the men that you gave me.

⁸ I told them what you wanted me to tell them. They believed me and they believe that you sent me.

⁹ I don't pray for the world. I pray for those that you gave me.

¹¹ Keep those who you've given me united, as you and I are united.

¹² I kept them together and I didn't lose any of them, except the son of hell, who fulfilled scripture.

¹⁴ I gave them your word. The world hated them, because they aren't of the world, as I'm not of the world.

²⁰ I pray not just for them, but for those who believe them.

²¹ I pray that they will be one, as you and I are one.

²⁴ Let them see my glory, because you loved me before the world was created.

Jesus is arrested

18 ¹⁰ Simon Peter drew his sword and cut off the right ear of the high priest's servant.

¹¹ Jesus said to Peter, “Put away your sword. Shouldn't I drink from the cup my Father has given me?”

Jesus is questioned by Pilate

³³ Pilate said to Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

³⁴ Jesus said, “Are you asking this on your own, or did others tell you about me?”

³⁵ Pilate said, “Am I a Jew? Your nation and chief priests have delivered you to me. What have you done?”

³⁶ Jesus said, “My kingdom isn't of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight for me.”

³⁷ Pilate said, “Are you a king then?”

Jesus said, “You say I'm a king. I was born to tell people about the truth. Everyone who believes the truth listens to me.”

³⁸ Pilate said to Jesus, “What is truth?”

Pilate tries to release Jesus (but the Jews wouldn't let him)

19 ⁶ When the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify him!"

Pilate said, "Crucify him yourselves. I find no fault in him."

⁷ The Jews said,

Our law says he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.

¹² If you let him go, you're not a friend of Caesar.

Whoever claims to be a king is an enemy of Caesar.

¹⁴ It was the day of preparation for the Passover, at about the sixth hour.

Pilate brought out Jesus again and said to the Jews, “Here is your king.”

¹⁵ The Jews cried out, "Crucify him!"

Pilate said, "Shall I crucify your king?"

The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar."

¹⁶ So Pilate sent him off to be crucified.

Jesus is crucified

^17-18 Jesus carried his cross to a place called Golgotha, which means the place of the skull, where they crucified him, between two others.

^19-20 Pilate put a sign written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. on the cross, which said, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS

²³ Each of the soldiers took some of Jesus's garments.

²⁴ And cast lots to see who would get his seamless coat.

²⁵ Several women stood by the cross, including: Jesus's mother, his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

²⁶ When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, this man is your son.”

²⁷ And he said to his disciple, “This is your mother.”

²⁸ Then he said, “I'm thirsty.”

²⁹ They lifted a sponge with vinegar and hyssop to Jesus's mouth.

³⁰ After Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, "It’s finished." Then he died.

The burial of Jesus

³¹ The Jews didn't want the bodies to remain on the crosses during the sabbath. So they asked Pilate if they could break the legs of those who were crucified, so the bodies could be taken away.

³² The soldiers broke the legs of the two who were crucified with Jesus.

³³ But they didn't break Jesus's legs, since he was already dead.

³⁴ One of the soldiers pierced Jesus's side with a spear, and water and blood came out of the wound.

³⁵ Someone saw it and told others about it. He knew what he said was true, so you can believe it.

³⁸ Pilate allowed Joseph of Arimathea to remove Jesus's body.

³⁹ Nicodemus anointed the body with myrrh and aloes

^40-42 They wrapped the body with linen and placed it in a new garden sepulcher.
