29 They lifted a sponge with vinegar and hyssop to Jesus's mouth.
30 After Jesus tasted the vinegar, he said, "It’s finished." Then he died.
The burial of Jesus
31 The Jews didn't want the bodies to remain on the crosses during the sabbath. So they asked Pilate if they could break the legs of those who were crucified, so the bodies could be taken away.
32 The soldiers broke the legs of the two who were crucified with Jesus.
33 But they didn't break Jesus's legs, since he was already dead.
34 One of the soldiers pierced Jesus's side with a spear, and water and blood came out of the wound.
35 Someone saw it and told others about it. He knew what he said was true, so you can believe it.
38 Pilate allowed Joseph of Arimathea to remove Jesus's body.
39 Nicodemus anointed the body with myrrh and aloes
40-42 They wrapped the body with linen and placed it in a new garden sepulcher.
A few more words about this episode
It was the day of preparation for the Passover (19:14)
Things I left out that were covered in previous episodes:
Jesus is arrested (18:1-11)
Same as in the synoptic gospels, except Peter is identified in John as the one who cut off the ear of the high priest's servant (Mt 26:47-56, Mk 14:43-50, Lk 22:47-53, Episode 247)
Jesus is taken to Annas and Peter denies Jesus (18:12-27)
