Jesus (the 7-horned, 7-eyed, 7-holy spirited dead lamb from chapter 5) begins breaking seals and all kinds of bad shit happens. Before each
seal is broken, a beast tells John to "come and see."
First seal: A man on a white horse goes conquering.
(6:2) "I saw ... a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow ... and he went forth conquering."
Second seal: A man with a big sword on a red horse forces people to kill each other.
(6:4) "Another horse ... was red: and power was given to him that sat thereon to take
peace from the earth, and that they should kill one another: and there was given unto him a great sword."
Third seal: A man on a black horse with a balance in his hand.
(6:5) "I beheld ... lo a black horse; and he that sat on him had a pair of balances in his hand."
Fourth seal: A pale horse with a rider named Death with Hell following was given power to kill one quarter of the
earth's population with the sword, starvation, and "the beasts of the earth."
(6:8) "I ... behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death,
and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with
death, and with the beasts of the earth."
Fifth seal: Dead martyrs. (This is the excuse for all the other killing.)
(6:9) "When he had opened the fifth seal, I saw... the souls of them that were slain for the word of God."
(6:10-11) The martyrs just can't wait until everyone
is slaughtered. God gives them white robes and tells them to wait until he's done with his killing spree.
(6:10) "They cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord ... dost thou not
... avenge our blood on them that
dwell on the earth?"
(6:11) "White robes were given unto every one of them; and it was said unto them, that they should rest ... until ... their
brethren ... be killed."
Sixth seal: A great earthquake, the sun becomes black, and the moon red, the stars fall from heaven,
mountains and islands move around, and everyone on earth wishes they were dead (if they're not already).
(6:12) "There was a great earthquake; and the sun became black ... and the moon became as blood."
(6:13) "The stars of heaven fell unto the earth."
(6:14) "Heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places."
(6:15) "The ... men ... hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains."
(6:16) "And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the from the wrath of the Lamb."
(6:17) "For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?"
