We could find a hobby if we wanted to (Surah 21)

Episode 22: We could find a hobby if we wanted to

Surah 21: The Prophets (Al-Anbiya)

Muddled dreams

5 They say, “The Quran is nothing but muddled dreams that Muhammad has invented.”

How many communities have we shattered?

6 The towns that we [Allah] destroyed disbelieved, even though we sent them lots of portents. 9 We destroyed the prodigals. 11 We shattered many communities and replaced them with others. 15 The people cried for mercy, but we killed them anyway.

We could find a hobby if we wanted to

17 If we wanted to find a hobby, we could have found one.

26 They say, “Allah has taken a son.”

29 We will send to hell anyone who claims to be a god.

We made the sky a roof

30 The sun, stars, and earth were joined together until we separated them. And we made every living thing from water. 32 The sky is a roof. 33 The sun and the moon float in an orbit. 37 I'll show you my portents, but don't ask me to be quick about it.

Can their gods protect them from us?

39 Disbelievers will not be able to put out the fire on their faces and backs. 40 They will be stupefied, and no one will help them. 43 Do they have gods that can protect them from us?

49 Fear the Lord in secret and dread the hour of doom.

Abraham's lie

52 Abraham said to his father and his people, “What are these images that you are worshiping?”

53 They answered, “These are the images that our fathers worshiped.”

54 Abraham replied, “Well, you and your fathers are wrong. And, by Allah, I'll destroy your idols when you aren't looking.”

58 And Abraham smashed them all to pieces, except for the largest one.

61 They said, “Did you destroy our gods, Abraham?”

63 Abraham said, “No, the largest one did it. Just ask the ones that he destroyed.”

65 They said, “You know they can't speak.”

66-67 Abraham said, “You shouldn’t worship them. Have you no sense?”

68 They said, “Stand up for your gods and burn Abraham to death.”

69 But we [Allah] said, “The fire will be coolness and peace for Abraham.”

70 And we made them the losers.

Lot - the just and righteous

74 We gave Lot judgment and knowledge. And we delivered him from the community of evil, abominations, and lewdness. 75 He was a righteous man.

We drowned them all

76-77 When Noah cried to us, we saved him and his family. But we drowned everyone else.

David and Solomon

79 The hills and birds sung hymns of praise to David and Solomon. 80 We taught Davd to make garments. Are you thankful for that? 81 And Solomon made the wind stop blowing.

82 Some evil ones dived for pearls.

Job's new family

83-84 When Job asked for mercy, we gave it to him by returning his family (after we killed them).

Ishmael, Idris, and Dhu'l-Kifl

85 And don't forget to mention Ishmael, Idris, and Dhu'l-Kifl. They were of the steadfast.

We gave Zachariah a son (by adjusting his wife)

89 And Zachariah, who cried out, "Don't leave me childless."

90 We heard his prayer and gave him John by adjusting his wife, so she'd have a son. 91 She was chaste, so we breathed into her something of our spirit, making her pregnant with a son. So worship me.

When God and Magog are let loose

95 There's a ban on any community that we destroyed.

96 When God and Magog are let loose, they'll come out of every mound.

97 Those who disbelieve will stare wide-eyed in terror.

98 You idolaters will be the fuel of hell.

A few more words about this episode

What are these images that you are worshiping? (21:52)
Verses 52-54 are sometimes interpreted to mean that images of Allah, Muhammad, or the other prophets are forbidden.
See BBC News: Depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
The largest one did it. Just ask the ones that he destroyed. (21:63)
Abraham destroyed his father's gods while no one was looking. Then he lied about it, saying the largest god destroyed the other gods. Since Muslims believe Abraham was a prophet and all prophets are perfect, Abraham's lie is a problem for them. They try to get around it by lying about it, saying that Abraham's lie really wasn't a lie. But clearly it was.
Lot was a righteous man. (21:74)
The Bible tells us that Lot offered his two virgin daughters to a crowd of angel rapers. Then he got drunk and impregnated them. (See Genesis 19 for the details.) This is, of course, a problem for both Islam and Christianity, but it's a bigger problem for Islam, since Islam considers Lot a prophet and insists that everything a prophet does is perfect.
The Quran and the Bible agree: Lot was a just and righteous man.
When Noah cried to us, we saved him and his family. (21:76)
Noah is another prophet in Islam. So it was okay for him to get drunk and curse his grandson (and all of his descendants) with slavery because his son saw him drunk and naked. (Genesis 9:20-29).
Did one of Noah's sons die in the flood?
When Job asked for mercy, we gave it to him by returning his family (after we killed them). (21:84)
God and/or Satan killed Job's ten children as part of a bet. (See Drunk with Blood: God and/or Satan kill Job's children, servants, and animals.)
But later, God made Job a new set of kids to replace the ones that he and Satan killed. (Job 42:10-17)
Don't forget to mention Ishmael, Idris, and Dhu'l-Kifl. They were of the steadfast. (21:85)
No one knows who these steadfast guys (Idris and Dhu'l-Kifl) were supposed to be.
She [Zechariah's wife] was chaste, so we breathed into her something of our spirit, making her pregnant with a son. (21:91)
Who did Allah impregnate with his spirit breath -- Zechariah's wife (Elizabeth) or Mary?
Was the birth of John the Baptist a virgin birth?
