Episode 23: The escape of the Nephites

Mosiah 22-24

22 1-8 Gideon went to King Limhi and said, “Let’s get the Lamanites drunk and run away into the wilderness while they are sleeping.” 9-10 The king thought that was a good idea, so he sent wine to the Lamanites and the Lamanites drank it.

11 That night the people left into the wilderness. 13 After many days they arrived in the land of Zarahemla and became subjects of King Mosiah. 14 Mosiah received them with joy, along the records that that the people of Limhi had found.

15 After the Lamanites woke up from their drunkenness, they sent an army to pursue the people of Limhi. 16 But they couldn’t find them and after two days they were lost in the wilderness.

Alma becomes high priest in the land of Helam

23 1 The Lord warned Alma that King Noah’s armies were sent to destroy them. So he gathered his people together and fled into the wilderness. 3-4 After eight days they came to a pleasant land of pure water. 5 So they pitched their tents and began to farm and build buildings.

6-7 The people wanted Alma to be their king, but he refused. 15-16 Instead, he became their high priest and told the people to love each other. 17-19 He consecrated priests to watch over the people, and they prospered exceedingly. 20 They built a city called Helam in the land of Helam.

God sends Lamanites to chasten the people of Alma

21-25 But God decided to chasten Alma’s people by sending an army of Lamanites to attack them. 27 Alma told the people not to be frightened because God would deliver them. 28 So the people asked God to soften the hearts of the Lamanites.

29 God heard their prayers and softened the hearts of the Lamanites. Then Alma and the people delivered themselves into the Lamanites hands.

Amulon joins the Lamanites

30-31 The Lamanites that got lost while chasing the people of King Limhi found the priests of King Noah, whose leader was Amulon. 33 Amulon sent the wives of the priests, who were the daughters of the Lamanites, to ask the Lamanites not to kill their husbands. 34 And the Lamanites had compassion on the priests and didn’t kill them.

35 Amulon and the priests joined the Lamanites, who were searching the land of Nephi when they discovered the land of Helam, which was possessed by the people of Alma.

36 The Lamanites told Alma and his people that if they’d show them the way to the land of Nephi, they wouldn’t kill or enslave them. 37 So Alma showed them the way to the land of Nephi, but the Lamanites didn’t keep their promise.

38 The Lamanites set guards around the land of Helam and sent an army to the land of Nephi. 39 Then the king of the Lamanites made Amulon king, subject to the will of the King of the Lamanites.

Amulon persecutes the people of Alma

24 1-6 Laman, the King of the Lamanites, appointed Amulon and his brethren to be teachers over his people, in the land of Shemlon, Shilom and Amulon. 7 The Lamanites become rich by doing all kinds of wicked things to everyone except for their own people. 8 Amulon began to persecute Alma and his people. 9-10 So Alma and his people began to cry out to God. 11 Amulon heard their cries to God and commanded them to stop praying, setting guards to watch them, and commanding the guards to kill anyone who prayed to God. 12 So Alma and his people quit crying out to God and began to pray silently. 13-17 The voice of the Lord came to them, saying, “Okay, be happy. Tomorrow I’ll set you free.”

The people of Alma escape to the land of Zarahelma

18-25 That night, Alma gathered his people, and their flocks, and their grain. Then, while God caused a very profound sleep to come upon the Lamanites, Alma and his people escaped. After twelve days in the wilderness, they arrived in the land of Zarahelma, where King Mosiah received them with joy.
