The celestial, terrestrial, and telestial worlds (76)

Episode 96: The celestial, terrestrial, and telestial worlds

Doctrine and Covenants

Section 76

A vision given to Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon at Hiram, Ohio, February 16, 1832

We saw Jesus, angels, and Satan

11-13 We, Joseph Smith, Jun. and Sidney Rigdon on February 16, 1831, were in the spirit, when we saw things that existed before anything existed. 14 We saw and talked to Jesus. 15 Here's how it happened. We were translating the Bible when we came to John 5:29, which we were told to translate as saying: “And shall come forth; they who have done good, in the resurrection of the just; and they who have done evil, in the resurrection of the unjust.” 18 This made us wonder, because it was given to us by the Spirit. 19 While we thought about this, the Lord touched the eyes of our understanding, and we saw the glory of the Lord round about. 21 We saw angels and people worshiping God and the Lamb. 24 The worlds were and are created by him. 25 And we also saw Lucifer. 28 While we were in the spirit, the Lord commanded us to write down the vision of Satan, the old serpent, the devil.

Apostates will be tormented forever

32 It would have been better if the sons of perdition had never been born. 33 Because they are doomed to suffer the wrath of God with the devil and his angels. 34 They will never be forgiven. 35 Because they denied the truth after believing it. 36 They'll go into the lake of fire with the devil and his angels. 37-38 They are the only ones who will die twice and won't be redeemed. 39 Everyone else will be resurrected. 43-44 Everyone will be saved except for the sons of perdition, who will be tormented forever.

Those who are in the resurrection of the just are gods

50-58 Those who are in the resurrection of the just are gods.

The celestial world

70 They have celestial bodies, and have a glory that is like the sun, and is equal to the glory of God.

The terrestrial world

71 We saw the terrestrial world. Their glory is like the moon. 72 They died before the law was given. 73 Jesus preached the gospel to them after they died. 74 And they believed him. 75 They were good people. 76 So they get some, but not all, of his glory. 78 Their bodies are terrestrial, not celestial. 79 Those who heard the testimony of Jesus but weren't valiant enough, don't get the crown. 80 And that's the end of the terrestrial vision that the Lord told us to write down while we were in the spirit.

The telestial world

81 The glory of the telestial world is like the stars - compared to the terrestrial, which is like the moon. 82 Those who don't accept Jesus go there. 83 But they don't deny the Holy Spirit. 84 They all go to hell. 85 They'll stay in hell until Jesus finishes his work. 89 We saw the glories of the telestial, which no one can understand. 99-100 The occupants of the telestial world say they are of Paul, Apollos, Cephas, Christ, John, Moses, Elias, Esaias, Isaiah, and Enoch. They didn't accept the gospel, and they won't go into the clouds with the saints. 103 They are liars, sorcerers, adulterers, and whoremongers. 104-5 They suffer the wrath of God on earth, and the vengeance of eternal fire. 106 They go to hell until Christ's enemies are under his feet. 107-8 Then Jesus will say to the Father, I've trodden the winepress of the fierceness of God's wrath, and he'll sit on his throne forever with a crown on his head. 109 There will be more inhabitants of the telestial world than there are stars in the sky or sand on the seashore. 111 They'll be judged by their works. 113 That's all we saw and were commanded to write down while we were still in the spirit. 115 Then he commanded us not to write anything else while we were in the spirit. It's against the law for anyone to say what we saw. 119 Amen.
