Episode 69: Moroni's Promise
Moroni 7-10
A few words from Moroni's father (Mormon)
7 1-48 Moroni interrupts his instructions to the Lamanites with a sermon from his father, Mormon. Mormon says the usual Book of Mormon things in the usual Book of Mormon way. True believers are good; everyone else is evil. I'd skip it if I were you.
Mormon's letter to his son Moroni
8 1 Moroni decided to include a letter from his father, Mormon.
5 In his letter, Mormon says he’s concerned about the way baptisms will be performed hundreds of years later. It seems that God has told him how the Catholics will be baptizing children, and he (and God) doesn't like it one little bit.
7 Mormon asked the Lord about it, and Jesus answered him directly, as Jesus always does whenever a Mormon prophet inquires of the Lord.
8-9 Jesus told Mormon that circumcision is no longer required, and children shouldn't be baptized. God is mocked every time a child is baptized. 14 Whoever thinks children should be baptized will be going to hell. 20-21 Jesus repeats his statement about children baptizers. They will be tormented forever in hell.
27 Mormon said that he’d try to write again later, if he can take break from fighting the Lamanites.
Feeding wives their own husbands, and children their own fathers
9 1 Mormon writes somewhat of that which is grievous to his son, Moroni.
2-3 Mormon had a sore battle with the Lamanites, who are always stirred up by Satan. 4 He preached non-stop to the Lamanites, but they trembled in anger or hardened their hearts against it. So Mormon figured the Spirit of the Lord was done striving with them. 5 So Mormon gave up on them, since they were such a loveless, blood-thirsty bunch of savages.
8 The Lamanites forced Nephite women and children to eat their own husbands and fathers. 9 The Nephites raped the Lamanite women, taking from them that which was most dear and precious to them – their virginity. 10 The Nephites murdered the Lamanites in a most cruel manner, torturing them to death, and eating their bodies after they died. 20 So they were even worse than the Lamanites.
Moroni's Promise - The John 3:16 of the Book of Mormon
10 1 Moroni writes somewhat whatever seems good to him. And, as the last surviving Nephite, he's writing to the Lamanites.
2 Even though he was writing for and to the Lamanites, who were still around, Moroni decided to bury the plates in Manchester, NY, and then about 1400 years later show Joseph Smith where to dig them up. Why didn't he just give them to the Lamanites that were living at the time?
4 If you ever visit a Mormon temple or talk to a Mormon missionary, you will be told about Moroni's promise. It's the LDS version of John 3:16. Here's the way it works: Ask God if the Book of Mormon is true and God will show you that it is. Just give it a chance. It'll feel good and you'll believe. It's just that easy!
24 Everything good comes from God and belief in God. Whatever is evil comes from unbelief.
28-31 God's word will hiss from his mouth; God will show you that Moroni's words are true; Don't touch the evil gift or the unclean thing; put on your beautiful garments, strengthen your stakes, and enlarge your borders forever.
34 Moroni ends by saying, “Goodbye. I’ll soon be going to heaven. I’ll go up in the air to meet you before the pleasing bar of Jehovah. Amen.”
