God told Satan to ride on the Missouri River (61-62)

Episode 92: God told Satan to ride on the Missouri River

Doctrine and Covenants 61-62

Section 61

Revelation given through Joseph Smith on the bank of the Missouri River, McIlwaine's Bend, August 12, 1831.

God cursed the waters - especially the Missouri River

1 Listen to the voice of God. 4 It's dangerous out there on the water. And it'll be worse from now on. 5 I'm angry so I'm destroying things on the water. Especially on this water. 6 All flesh is in my hand. If you're faithful to me you won't die on the water.

7 Sidney Gilbert and William W. Phelps are going on a mission. 8 But before they leave, I need to chastise you for your sins. 10 I'll be with them. They won't die if they're faithful.

11 Everyone else should take the necessary clothing with them.12 But Sidney Gilbert may take things that aren't necessary.

13 I gave you a commandment. I'll reason with you like I did back in the good old days.14 In the beginning I blessed the water, but now, in the last days, I (by John's mouth) curse the waters. 15 Someday no one will be safe on the water. 16 No one will travel to Zion on the water, except for those who have an upright heart. 17 In the beginning I cursed the land, but in the last days I'll bless it. (So the saints can eat its fatness.) 18 Now I give you another commandment: Warn the others about the waters.

God told Satan to ride on the Missouri River

19 I've commanded the destroyer to ride on the water. I'll never tell him not to. 20 Yesterday, I was angry with you. But today I'm feeling okay. 21 Those who are going must hurry. I'll say it again: Those who are going must hurry. 22 I don't care whether they go by water or by land. 23But Sidney Rigdon, Joseph Smith, Jr., and Oliver Cowdery shouldn't go by water, unless it's a canal. In other words, they shouldn't go by water, unless it's a canal. 24 After they get off the canal, they'll travel by land to Zion.

27 Whoever can command water, has the power of the Spirit.

30 Sidney Rigdon, Joseph Smith, Jr., and Oliver Cowdery won't open their mouths to the wicked until they arrive in Cincinnati. 31 When they get there, they'll speak against the wicked people of Cincinnati, whom God wants to destroy. 33 The others will also preach to the wicked. 34 By doing this they'll get rid of their garments and be spotless before me. 35 Let them go two by two.

38 Gird up your loins, and look for the coming of the Son of Man. He'll come when your least expect it. 39 Pray that you'll be ready when he comes, whether you're alive or dead. Amen

Section 62

Revelation given through Joseph Smith the Prophet, on the bank of the Missouri River at Chariton, Missouri, August 13, 1831

Go two by two - on horses, mules, or chariots

1 This is Jesus. Listen to me. 2 My eyes are on those of you who haven't left yet for Zion. 3 The angels are looking at your testimony. They rejoice over you. 4 So continue your journey. 5 Go two by two - if that seems good to you. It doesn't matter much to me. Just bear glad tidings to wicked people. 6 I promise you (and I can't lie) that you'll rejoice together in Missouri. 7 It's okay with me if you ride on horses, or mules, or in chariots. You'll receive a blessing from the Lord's hand no matter what you ride on. 9 The kingdom is yours. Amen.
