45 Alma asked his son Helaman, “Do you believe everything that I’ve told you? 4 Do you believe Jesus Christ will come? 6 Will you keep all of my commandments?”
7 Helaman said, “Yes, I believe everything you’ve ever said.” 9 Alma said, “Okay then, I have a prophecy for you. 10-14 Four hundred years after Jesus appears to the Nephites (434 CE), they will dwindle in unbelief and either join the Lamanites or die by wars, diseases, and famines. 16 The Lord said that the land will be cursed, and every nation, kindred, tongue, and people will be destroyed.”
17-18 Then Alma blessed everyone and left as if he was going to the land of Melek. He was never heard from again. No one knows what happened to him. 19 But some members of the church said that God buried Alma, like he did Moses. Or that his spirit was taken directly to heaven by God.
22 After Alma left, Helaman appointed priests and teachers throughout the land, and established churches in every city. 23-24 But some of the people, who were proud and rich, refused to obey him.
46 1 Those who refused to follow Helaman, decided to kill him and his brethren. 2-4 Their leader was Amalickiah, a big, strong man of cunning devices, who wanted to be king. 5-10 He quickly led many people away from the church by flattering them.
11 When Moroni heard about Amalickiah, he ripped up his coat, took a piece of it, and wrote the following words on it: 12 “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.”
13 Then he fastened it and the torn coat to a pole and called it the "Title of Liberty." When he was done with that, he put on his armor and prayed for his brethren, whom he called a band of Christians. 14-15 (All the true believers in Christ were called Christians by those who didn’t belong to the church, because they believed in Christ who was still to come.)
19-20 Then Moroni went out among the people and waved the “Title of Liberty” around so that everyone had a chance to see it, and he yelled out the following speech: “Behold, whosoever will maintain this title upon the land, let them come forth in the strength of the Lord, and enter into a covenant that they will maintain their rights, and their religion, that the Lord God may bless them.”
21 After Moroni said this, all of the people ran together, ripped up their clothes, threw the pieces at Moroni’s feet, and said: 22 “Let God rip us up just like we ripped up our clothes, if we fall into transgression.”
23-27 Then Moroni gave a speech about Joseph's coat of many colors that his brothers ripped up, and how that was related to the oath that his people just made. You see, part of Joseph's coat survived, so that means that part of Moroni's seed will survive, since he made a ripping oath.
28 After he finished his speech, Moroni sent out messengers and he toured around the land trying to gather up people who were on his side, and who would stand up and fight Amalickiah with him. 29 When Amalickiah saw that he was clearly outnumbered, he and his army left the land of Nephi.
30 But Moroni wanted to kill Amalickiah, since he was worried that Amalickiah would join the Lamanites. 31 So he took his army into the wilderness to find Amalickiah.
33 Amalickiah and a few others managed to escape, but the rest were captured and taken to the land of Zarahemla. 34-35 Moroni made the Amalichiahite prisoners of war enter a covenant to support the cause of freedom, or else he killed them. Most of them agreed to enter the covenant. 36 Then, in 73 BCE, Moroni hoisted up his "Title of Liberty" onto every tower in the land.
39-41 Many died from old age and a few from other causes (not many, though, because God provided them with plants and roots to cure diseases). But those who died in the faith of Christ are now happy – we suppose.
