Intolerance in Alma

  1. "What he had taught to the people was contrary to the word of God; and there he suffered an ignominious death."
Nehor was killed for teaching the heresy of universalism. 1:4, 15

  2. "Priestcraft"
The term "priestcraft" is an obvious attempt to denigrate the Catholic Church. 1:12

  3. Those who didn't belong to the right church were lazy, wicked, babbling, idolatrous, proud people who were all a bunch of thieves and murderers. 1:32

  4. The Lamanites were naked, and their skins were dark because of a curse from God. 3:5-6

  5. God darkened the skin of the Lamanites (Native Americans) to keep them separate from the Nephites. 3:8

  6. Whoever "mingles his seed" with the Lamanites will be cursed by God and will "bring the same curse upon his seed." (Their children will have dark skins.) 3:9

  7. Whoever is led away by the Lamanites will have "a mark set upon him." (God will darken his skin?) 3:10

  8. God darkened the skin of the Lamanites (Native Americans) to forever separate them from the Nephites. 3:14

  9. Whoever "mingles his seed" with the Lamanites will be cursed by God. (They and their children will have dark skins.) 3:15

  10. If you are not a sheep of the good shepherd, the devil is your shepherd. 5:39

  11. Stay away from those who do not share your religious views. 5:57

  12. I trust you are not in a state of unbelief. 7:6

  13. God favored the Nephites over all other people on earth. 9:20

  14. The Lamanites were a wild, ferocious, and lazy people who delighted in murdereing, robbing, and plundering. God cursed them because of what their fathers did. 17:14-15

  15. "The dark veil of unbelief" 19:6

  16. God's curse of the Lamanites was lifted from the "Anti-Nephi-Lehies." So did their skin became "white and delightsome" again? 23:18

  17. The Lamanites (Native Americans) "began to hunt the seed of Amulon ... and began to slay them."
"Behold, they are hunted at this day by the Lamanites." 25:8-9

  18. The Lamanites (Native Americans) "delight in the shedding of blood" and spend their days in "the grossest iniquity." 26:24

  19. Korihor is arrested for expressing his disbelief. 30:29

  20. Since Alma can't refute Korihor's arguments, he says he'll have God smite him so that he can no longer speak. It's better, he says, that Korihor's soul be lost than that he convince others that there is no God. 30:47

  21. Korihor "was struck dumb ... according to the words of Alma." 30:50

  22. "The curse was not taken off of Korihor; but he was cast out, and went about from house to house begging for his food." 30:56

  23. The chief judge warned everyone not to believe Korihor or they will also be struck dumb and be forced to beg for their food. 30:57

  24. Korihor was trampled upon by the Nephites until he was dead. 30:59

  25. If you ask God to kill your enemies, he will do it for you. 33:10

  26. Denying the Holy Ghost (refusing to become Mormon or escaping from Mormonism?) is the greatest abomination and is unpardonable. 39:5-6

  27. Evil people are those who "have no part or portion of the Spirit of the Lord." They will be "cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth." 40:13

  28. The Amalekites were even "more wicked and murderous" than the Lamanites. 43:6

  29. The Lamanites were, of course, naked. 43:37

  30. God is with Moroni and the Nephites. The Lord has delivered the Lamanites into their hands "because of [their] religion and [their] faith in Christ." 44:3

  31. "Now ye see that this is the true faith of God." (You can tell by all the nonbelievers they kill.) 44:4

  32. In the war with the Lamanites, God is on the Nephites side. He just likes their religion better. 44:5

  33. Moroni gets angry and orders his people to kill the Lamanites, which was exceedingly easy since they were all naked as jaybirds. 44:17-18

  34. Alma prophesies that the Nephites will "dwindle in unbelief" 400 years after Jesus is born. (Dwindling in unbelief is really bad.) 45:10

  35. If the Nephites forsake God, then God will tear them to pieces. 46:21

  36. The Nephites make a deal with God. If they fail to follow God properly, then God can kill them all. 46:22

  37. Those who will not support the cause of freedom are put to death. (The Bush Doctrine?) 46:35

  38. The dissenters become even more "wild, wicked, and ferocious than the Lamanites [Native Americans], giving way to indolence and all manner of lasciviousness." 47:36

  39. Those who were faithful "were delivered at all times," while "thousands of their wicked brethren" were enslaved, killed, forced to dwindled in unbelief, or to "mingle with the Lamanites [Native Americans]." 50:22

  40. Moroni writes a petition empowering him "to compel those dissenters to defend their country or to put them to death." 51:15

  41. Four thousand dissenters were "hewn down by the sword." 51:19

  42. The rest of the dissenters were forced to live in freedom (just like the Iraqis!). 51:20
